7Whether you live in an apartment or a house, you may get annoyed from time to time in how high your electricity bill is each month. Sometimes this cannot be lowered as much because of the nature of your home; for example, an older building will automatically mean higher electricity bills. However, there are a few things you can do to help lower that bill and save a little money. Making changes in using the lighting of your home and how you use your Charleston air conditioning can make a big difference.

Saving on Lighting

Though lights themselves do not use a lot of electricity, the price will add up over time if you are not smart in how you use your lights. Many people will leave lights on when they leave the house or are not in a room. This can waste a lot of electricity that could be saved with the flick of a switch. Whenever you leave the room, always turn to turn the light off. Before you leave the house, walk through the entire house to make sure that no lights are left on. This may not be needed after a while once you get used to turning the light off every time you leave a room. It may take some time, but it will become second nature after a while. If you need, give yourself a little extra time when you leave in the morning so that you are not too rushed to walk through the house before you leave.

You can also avoid turning lights on if they are not needed. Rooms with a lot of windows may not need interior lights on during the day. By opening the blinds and curtains, you can get enough natural light in the rooms to avoid the need for lights altogether. This can save a lot of money.

Saving on Air Conditioning/Heating

The cooling and heating of your home can quickly use up a lot of energy, especially if you live in a place with extreme climates. By better insulating your home and avoiding using the air conditioning and heater when they are not needed, you can lower your electricity bill by quite a bit. First, insulate your home by covering the cracks in doors and windows with rolled up towels. Cover windows with thick curtains. If you own your own home, you may even consider getting better insulation in your walls, which will pay for itself over time. Avoid opening doors and windows while the system is running, because it will drastically change the temperature in your home.

You should also avoid turning on your Charleston air conditioning or heater when you don’t need it. Turn it off when you are gone during the day and no one is home. There is no point in monitoring the temperature of an empty home. You should also change the settings in the night when everyone is asleep. Sleeping without covers in the summer or with extra blankets in the winter can keep your body temperature level without using electricity. You may even want to set it on a timer so that the house is at a good temperature when you get up in the morning.
